Cold Laser Therapy Treatment for Santa Clara

There are technologies created to help individuals treat pain that many people in Santa Clara are unaware of. One of the fastest growing treatments is cold laser therapy (CLT) or low level laser therapy (LLLT). This noninvasive treatment involves using a low frequency laser to stimulate the tissues of the body and increase the healing process.

The treatment itself is nothing new as it was first brought into the field of medicine in 1967 by professor Andre Mester. At the time, the technology was immensely expensive and thus, very few individuals could become practitioners or afford to partake in the therapy. Nowadays, modern advancements have made cold laser therapy a much more affordable option that is more widely used among medical professionals.

Pain Management with Low Level Laser Therapy

We all know that plants are able to take the light of the sun and turn it into energy. Humans do not have this ability (photosynthesis) but our cells still do react to light. Certain light frequencies can cause the melanin in our skin to react causing people to tan and low power lasers can promote healing and reduce inflammation.

The laser is a handheld device that the operator will direct towards damaged parts of the body and leave there for one or several minutes, depending on the severity of the injury or problem. Photons in the laser penetrate deep into the skin and muscles, activating proteins in mitochondria to improve tissue repair. The light is a low-level laser and it is able to penetrate the area but does not cause any form of discomfort, though some patients have noted a mild tingling sensation. The therapy is used in several areas, from pain management, to dentistry, to human and animal rehabilitation.

Specific cold laser therapy systems are recognized by the FDA for relief of these conditions:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Healing wounds
  • Pain caused by muscle spasms
  • Arthritis-based stiffness
  • Neck pain

How Long Does the LLLT Treatment Take?

This depends on the age and seriousness of an injury. However, all treatments require a series of sessions for the therapy to be affective, usually from 8 to 30. Treatments also need to take place in close succession, meaning that treatments can be 2 to 4 times a week. However, as the treatment often only requires a few minutes per session, most of our Santa Clara patients find it easy to organize their schedules accordingly.
